Recreational activities in Rickmansworth Aquadrome

The Rickmansworth Aquadrome in Rickmansworth, England, is a vast public park and local nature reserve spanning 41 hectares and is considered one of the most popular green spaces in Hertfordshire. Managed by the Three Rivers District Council, this place offers a unique combination of nature, recreational opportunities, and historical significance. The park is located at the northern end of the Colne Valley Regional Park, bordering the River Colne to the north, the Grand Union Canal to the east and south, and the Stocker's Lake nature reserve to the west. Since 2009, the Aquadrome has held the Green Flag Award, an accolade for high-quality parks and green spaces, which it has retained every year since.

Nature observation in Hertfordshire park

The history of the Aquadrome is closely tied to its formation: The two main lakes, Batchworth Lake and Bury Lake, were created in the early 20th century through gravel extraction, with the material used for the construction of the original Wembley Stadium among other projects. After gravel extraction ceased in the 1920s, the pits gradually filled with water, supported by natural springs and tributaries of the River Colne. Today, these lakes are the heart of the park and serve different purposes: Batchworth Lake is a center for water sports such as water skiing and jet skiing, while Bury Lake is used by the Bury Lake Young Mariners youth organization for sailing and canoeing. Access to these activities is restricted to members of the respective clubs, and private use of water sports equipment is prohibited.

In addition to the lakes, the Aquadrome offers a variety of landscapes, including open grassy areas, dense oak and willow woodlands, and rare wetlands that are considered valuable habitats. This diversity makes the park a hotspot for nature enthusiasts. The birdlife is particularly impressive, with permanent residents including herons, cormorants, and grebes, while winter months see migratory birds such as teal, goldeneye, and pochards enriching the area. Butterflies like the small copper and brown hairstreak can also be found here. The paths around the lakes are easily accessible and suitable for wheelchairs and strollers, making the park particularly family-friendly.

Family-friendly parks in England

For visitors, there are numerous recreational opportunities. Apart from water sports activities, various walking trails attract visitors, ranging from short strolls around the lakes to longer routes along the canal or through the woodlands. A particularly popular section is the Batchworth Lake Circular Walk, which allows for a leisurely loop around the lake. Children can enjoy a large playground with climbing frames, slides, and swings, often highlighted as a highlight. A café in the park serves hot and cold food and drinks, providing a welcome resting spot. Picnics are also allowed, though barbecue equipment is strictly prohibited to protect the environment.

Bird species in Rickmansworth nature reserve

The Aquadrome is not only a place of relaxation but also a paradise for nature lovers. Its proximity to the Grand Union Canal expands walking opportunities, and the surrounding landscape invites observation of seasonal changes in flora and fauna. In autumn, maple and plane trees provide a colorful backdrop, while spring and summer showcase blooming meadows and active wildlife. The park is also a popular meeting point for locals who come here to jog, cycle, or simply enjoy the tranquility.

Despite its popularity, the Aquadrome does have some minor drawbacks. On particularly busy days, it can get crowded, especially near the playground and café. Some visitors also note that the paths can become muddy after heavy rain, especially in the wooded areas. Nonetheless, overall park maintenance is praised, and the decision to preserve the original character of the gravel pit landscape rather than overly modernize it is well-received.

Not sure how to review this place, the Rickmansworth boat festival was stopped because of asbestos in the area, yet it's OK for kids to play, run about and cycle. Was there asbestos or did the locals want the festival closed down, or do kids and their parents kick up less asbestos? Not really sure about this. I see a pic of the festival still appears on their web page. I put three stars as I'm on the fence, surely if there was asbestos it would be closed to all and not just boaters for one weekend a year.

Lovely walk around, some people should keep their dogs on a lead though instead of shouting them every 10 seconds....was annoying at all! Busy, car parking was hard due to it being so busy.

It's a great park, very nice layout round the lakes and woodland, and nicely tarmaced paths for the wetter days. Theres quiet a lot of bird life on and around the lakes as well. It's also got a well stocked cafe for a drink or something to eat. There's a car park along side and it's not too far from the Rickmansworth tube station either.
